Frenectomy Laser Surgery
WARNING – VERY GRAPHIC: Frenums that have a high concentration of fibrous connective tissue can interfere with other dental treatments and/or cause unwanted aesthetic effects.
The young high school aged male in this video recently completed orthodontic treatment to address spacing, occlusal and basic alignment needs.
Within a short time of completing the orthodontic treatment, however, a diastema or space reappeared between his central incisors. The separation of the two front teeth was caused by an unruly frenum….. NOT the ortho treatment.
Two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time. The teeth are squeezed together during the orthodontic treatment but the frenum tissue between the teeth also gets squeezed between the teeth. Upon removal of the orthodontic appliances the dense frenum tissue will apply a separation force to the affected teeth.
In addition, connective tissue fibers similar to bungee cords exist around the gumline for all teeth which can get stretched during orthodontic treatment. These fibers are often blamed for causing teeth to return to their original position.
The solution requires removal of the dense tissue between the teeth (frenectomy) and relaxing incisions beneath the gumline (circumferential fiberotomy) to release the bungee cord-like tissue fibers. These procedures help the orthodontist reposition the teeth and retain the teeth in the desired position.
Dr Brant determined that due to an unusually high concentration of connective tissue, a routine shortening of the frenum alone may not create the enduring result wanted by the patient.
See how minimally invasive laser treatments were used by Dr. Brant to alter the width and connective characteristics of the patient’s frenum. The self cauterizing laser treatment is a pain free experience usually performed with local anesthesia only. Sedation is not normally needed. Quick healing and only mild soreness are typically reported by patients.
Long-term tissue healing outcomes and esthetic results typically surpass results obtained with traditional frenectomies.
